Hello! I am doing research on Swallow-tailed Kites (Elanoides forficatus) and am trying to figure out 1. if these birds breed in Surinam 2. when they breed 3. do they breed in the south of Surinam and 4. Are all the birds in Surinam are resident, or are there some birds that breed in southern south america, and then migrate to spend the winter (April- August) in the south of Surinam. If anyone has any information or guesses- I'd love to hear them! Thanks. (P.S. Anyone know if there is a town called "Republick?).

Swallow-tailed kites

Truely a beautiful sight to see. Swallow tailed kites soaring high over the rainforest. I consistently see a group of about ten at a specific height (not too far south) on the Maratakka river and have also spotted them on the Corantijn and Kabalebo rivers.

Apparantly the group of the Maratakka river is permanent for that area. I am not sure if any migration takes place.

Breeding has been documented in Suriname.

A suggestion may be to contact Stinasu, mail me for address info. They have a bird observation/research/conservation/awareness program.

Republiek is an old plantation, now used as recreation area, mainly for Paramaribo residents.

Hope this helps ;)
