This theme concerns the free colonial population and society in the former Dutch colony of Surinam prior to the abolition of slavery there in 1863. Colonial Surinam currently encompasses two databases.
The first details the births, marriages and deaths of tens of thousands of people in Surinam during the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of the data comes from parish records, particularly those of the Dutch Reformed Church. The original archive documents are housed in the Nationaal Archief.
The second database contains personal and family data pertaining to the "boeroes" or "burus". They were a group of about 500 immigrants from the Netherlands who, from 1845, attempted to establish self-supporting farms in Surinam. Some of the original records upon which this database is based remain in Surinam.
